North Texas doesn't have mild weather — it has extremes, sometimes in the same week. Scorching heat, sudden hailstorms, hard freezes, and long dry spells all put different kinds of stress on artificial turf. Here's what each one actually does to your yard, and what to watch for.
Extreme heat: the big one
DFW summers routinely push artificial turf surface temperatures 40–70°F hotter than the air around it. That heat accelerates bacterial growth (worse pet odor, faster) and speeds up infill compaction as the material expands and contracts through daily heat cycles. If your maintenance schedule is going to flex anywhere during the year, July and August is where it matters most.
Hail and severe storms
Quality artificial turf is built to take a hit — the fibers are designed to flex rather than snap — but a bad hailstorm can still mat fibers down hard and drive debris deep into the base. After a significant storm, it's worth checking whether fibers are springing back upright on their own or need a power-brushing pass to recover fully.
Sudden freezes
Texas freezes are unpredictable — 70°F one week, a hard freeze the next. Artificial turf itself doesn't get damaged by cold the way natural grass does, but drainage can be a problem: if debris has built up in the infill layer, freezing water can slow drainage further right when winter rain and ice need somewhere to go.
Drought and water restrictions
This is where artificial turf earns its keep. During DFW's periodic watering restrictions, artificial turf yards don't need a drop, while natural lawns brown out or violate watering schedules. The tradeoff: without rain to naturally rinse the surface, dust, pollen, and pet residue can build up faster during dry stretches, which is exactly when a cleaning is easy to forget because "it's not getting used as much."
A simple year-round approach
- Tighten your cleaning schedule through peak summer heat (see our seasonal maintenance guide)
- Do a quick fiber check after any major hail or windstorm
- Keep debris cleared going into winter so freeze cycles don't compound drainage issues
- Don't skip cleanings during dry spells just because the yard "looks fine" from a distance
