How Often Should You Clean Artificial Turf? A Seasonal Maintenance Schedule

Artificial turf is marketed as "low maintenance," and compared to a natural lawn, it is. But low maintenance doesn't mean no maintenance — and the cleaning schedule that keeps a turf yard looking (and smelling) like new is different depending on the season, your pets, and how the space gets used.

The baseline: every 2–3 months for most yards

For a typical residential backyard without pets, a professional deep clean every two to three months is enough to stay ahead of dust, pollen, and general debris buildup at the base of the fibers. This is also roughly how often you should be doing a quick DIY pass with a leaf blower or push broom in between visits.

Pet owners: monthly, or every 4–6 weeks

If dogs use the yard regularly, that timeline shortens considerably. Urine and solid waste that aren't fully extracted work their way down into the infill and backing, where bacteria keeps breeding long after the surface looks clean. That's what causes the ammonia smell that gets worse in heat and humidity. Most of our DFW pet-owner customers land on a 4–6 week cadence for enzymatic cleaning and full odor extraction.

Peak summer: don't skip a cycle

Heat accelerates everything — bacteria growth, odor, and infill compaction. If you're going to tighten your schedule anywhere, do it in July and August. This is especially true across our Texas service areas, where surface temperatures on artificial turf regularly climb 40–70°F above the air temperature.

Fall and winter: an easier stretch, with one exception

Cooler months are more forgiving — bacteria growth slows and there's less foot traffic on the lawn generally. The exception is leaf and seed debris in the fall, which can mat down into the fibers if left too long and start blocking drainage. A single thorough cleaning heading into winter sets the yard up well for spring.

Signs you're overdue, regardless of the calendar

If any of those sound familiar, it's time for a professional cleaning rather than another DIY rinse. Get a free quote or see our full Texas service areas.
